Pregnancy gingivitis is a condition that occurs to many women during pregnancy. Gingivitis is the early stage of periodontal gum disease. If left attended, the condition may worsen causing further damage to the teeth and gums.
There have been some studies linking pregnancy gingivitis with babies that are premature or undersized. One group stated that women with periodontal disease are seven times more likely to have premature babies.
The jury may still be out regarding the link, however, it is definitely not something to take lightly. Gum disease also has been linked with heart diseaes, diabetes, and strokes.
How do you know if you have gingivitis during pregnancy?
The symptoms usually include any of the following:
- Bleeding gums
- Tender, swollen, or infected gums
- Bad breath (sign of bacteria overgrowth)
